What to Pack for a Rwanda Safari: The Essential Packing List

20 March 2026·8 min read

A practical, no-nonsense packing list for Rwanda — covering gorilla trekking gear, safari clothing, electronics, health essentials, and lodge wear.

The Golden Rule: Layers

Rwanda sits close to the equator but at altitude (1,500–4,500m). Mornings in the Virungas can be 8°C; afternoons in Akagera hit 30°C. The solution is layers — lightweight base layers that can be added or removed throughout the day.

Rwanda's climate doesn't require heavy winter gear. Think temperate autumn rather than tropical heat.

Gorilla Trekking Essentials

- Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support (broken in before the trip) - Long trousers tucked into socks (protection from nettles and ants) - Long-sleeved shirt in muted, earth-tone colours - Waterproof jacket or lightweight rain poncho - Gardening gloves (for grabbing vines and branches on steep terrain) - Gaiters (optional but excellent for muddy trails) - Wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen (SPF 50+) - Daypack (porter will carry it, but you need one) - 1–2 litres of water and energy snacks - Trekking poles (most lodges provide them)

Safari Game Drive Clothing

For Akagera National Park game drives: - Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, tan, brown) - Lightweight long-sleeved shirts (sun and insect protection) - Comfortable trousers or convertible pants - Fleece or light jacket for early morning drives - Closed-toe shoes (not sandals) - Binoculars (8x42 or 10x42 recommended) - Sun hat and UV-protective sunglasses

Avoid bright white, neon, or dark blue clothing — these attract tsetse flies in savanna environments.

Photography Gear

- Camera with zoom lens (70–200mm is ideal for gorillas; 100–400mm for Akagera wildlife) - Smartphone (excellent for gorilla portraits at close range) - Extra batteries and memory cards (cold altitude drains batteries faster) - Waterproof camera bag or rain cover - No flash — strictly prohibited during gorilla treks - No drones — banned in all national parks

Health & Toiletries

- Insect repellent (DEET 30%+ or Picaridin) - Antimalarials (consult your travel doctor; Kigali is low-risk, Akagera is higher) - Yellow fever vaccination certificate (required for entry) - Sunscreen SPF 50+ - Hand sanitiser and wet wipes - Personal medications in original packaging - Basic first aid kit (plasters, ibuprofen, electrolyte sachets) - Rehydration salts (altitude + physical exertion = dehydration risk)

Lodge & Evening Wear

Rwanda's luxury lodges are relaxed but stylish. You don't need formal attire, but smart-casual is appreciated at dinner: - Lightweight linen or cotton trousers/dress - Collared shirt or blouse - Light cardigan or cashmere wrap (evenings are cool) - Comfortable slip-on shoes

Most lodges offer laundry service, so you can pack lighter than you think. A 7-night Rwanda safari can be done comfortably with a single soft-sided duffle bag (15–20kg).
