Best Time to Visit Rwanda: Month-by-Month Safari Guide

5 March 2026·9 min read

A month-by-month breakdown of Rwanda's climate, wildlife viewing conditions, permit availability, and lodge pricing to help you choose the perfect travel window.

Rwanda's Two Seasons

Rwanda has two dry seasons and two wet seasons:

Long Dry Season: June–September. The most popular period for gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris. Clear skies, firm trails, and excellent visibility.

Short Dry Season: Mid-December–February. Warm and dry, good for combining gorilla trekking with Akagera game drives.

Long Rains: March–May. The heaviest rainfall, but gorilla treks still operate daily. Lush landscapes, fewer visitors, and lower lodge rates.

Short Rains: October–November. Brief afternoon showers, beautiful light for photography, and good wildlife viewing in Akagera (animals gather at water sources).

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January–February: Warm and relatively dry. Great for Akagera safaris (Big Five sightings peak at waterholes). Gorilla permits are available. Moderate lodge pricing.

March–May: Rainy season. Trails are muddy, but the forest is spectacular. Lodge rates drop 15–25%. Fewer tourists mean more intimate gorilla encounters. Golden monkey treks are excellent.

June–September: Peak season. Dry trails, clear mountain views, and the best overall conditions. Permits sell out months in advance. Lodge rates at their highest.

October: Transition month. Short rains begin but are rarely disruptive. Excellent birdwatching (migratory species arrive). Good availability.

November: Wettest month. Budget-friendly rates, dramatic skies, and lush green landscapes. Still a viable trekking month.

December: Early December is quiet and affordable. Late December (festive period) sees a spike in demand and premium lodge pricing.

When to Book for the Best Value

The best value window for Rwanda is March–May and November: you get the same gorilla experience at lower lodge rates with easier permit availability.

The combo permit discount (gorilla + Akagera or Nyungwe = $1,050 instead of $1,500) applies year-round and is the single best way to reduce costs without sacrificing experience.

For budget-conscious travellers who still want dry weather, January–February hits the sweet spot: reasonable rates, warm weather, and good availability.
