Explore Nyungwe Forest National Park — Africa's oldest montane rainforest. Chimpanzee trekking, the famous canopy walk, colobus monkeys, and tea plantation lodges.
Africa's Oldest Montane Rainforest
Nyungwe Forest National Park covers 1,019 km² of southwestern Rwanda and is one of the largest remaining tracts of montane forest in Central Africa. The forest is estimated to be over 10 million years old, making it one of the oldest on the continent.
With 13 primate species (including chimpanzees and a troop of 400+ L'Hoest's monkeys), 310 bird species, 1,068 plant species, and 120 butterfly species, Nyungwe is a biodiversity powerhouse that rivals any ecosystem on earth.
Chimpanzee Trekking
Nyungwe is home to a community of roughly 500 chimpanzees, of which two groups have been habituated for tourist visits. A chimp trek permit costs USD $90 per person.
Unlike gorilla trekking — where encounters are calm and contemplative — chimp trekking is dynamic and unpredictable. Chimpanzees move fast, vocalize loudly, and can lead you on a vigorous chase through dense undergrowth. The payoff: watching our closest genetic relatives use tools, groom each other, and communicate with complex social signals.
Treks depart at 5:30 AM (chimps are most active early) and last 2–5 hours.
The Canopy Walkway
Nyungwe's signature attraction beyond primates is the Igishigishigi Canopy Walkway — a 200-metre suspended bridge that sits 50 metres above the forest floor. It is the only facility of its kind in East Africa.
The walk offers panoramic views across the forest canopy and the chance to spot L'Hoest's monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and a spectacular array of bird species from above. The experience takes roughly 2 hours including the approach hike.
Where to Stay
- One&Only Nyungwe House: Set on a working tea plantation on the forest edge, with 22 suites, fine dining, and direct park access. - Nyungwe Top View Lodge: Mid-range lodge with forest views and guided birding. - Gisakura Guest House: Budget-friendly RDB-managed accommodation at the park entrance.
Nyungwe is typically combined with either Volcanoes National Park (gorillas) to the north or Lake Kivu (relaxation) to the west.
