Volcanoes National Park: Everything You Need to Know

1 February 2026·11 min read

A comprehensive guide to Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park — history, wildlife, activities beyond gorillas, lodges, and how to plan your visit.

Africa's Most Famous Primate Sanctuary

Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) covers 160 km² of Rwanda's northwestern corner, protecting five of the eight Virunga volcanoes: Karisimbi (4,507m), Bisoke (3,711m), Sabyinyo (3,634m), Gahinga (3,474m), and Muhabura (4,127m).

Established in 1925 as Africa's first national park, it is most famous as the home of mountain gorillas and the research site of primatologist Dian Fossey, whose work at the Karisoke Research Center (established 1967) brought global attention to gorilla conservation.

Activities Beyond Gorilla Trekking

While gorilla trekking is the headline experience, the park offers several other activities:

Golden Monkey Tracking ($100): Trek to find the endangered golden monkey, endemic to the Virungas. Faster-paced than gorilla trekking, with playful troops leaping through bamboo canopy.

Dian Fossey Tomb Hike ($75): A challenging 3–4 hour hike to the site of the former Karisoke Research Center and Dian Fossey's grave, at 3,000m altitude.

Volcano Hikes: Summit Bisoke (6–7 hours round trip, crater lake at the top) or Karisimbi (2-day hike, highest peak in Rwanda). Both require good fitness.

Cultural Experiences: Visit the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village near the park entrance to learn about traditional Rwandan life, including former poachers who now work as community guides.

Where to Stay

The park's gateway town is Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri), 2 hours from Kigali. The finest lodges sit on the volcano foothills:

- Bisate Lodge (Wilderness): 6 forest villas with volcano views - Singita Kwitonda Lodge: 8 suites with a 178-acre reforestation corridor - One&Only Gorilla's Nest: Spacious silverback suites with spa - Amakoro Songa Lodge: Mid-range eco-lodge with excellent guides

All lodges arrange gorilla permit procurement, pre-trek briefings, and packed lunches for trek day.
