Akagera National Park: Rwanda's Big Five Safari Destination

2 January 2026·8 min read

Discover Akagera — Rwanda's only Big Five park. Lions, rhinos, elephants, leopards, and buffalo across 1,122 km² of savanna, lakes, and wetlands.

Africa's Greatest Comeback Story

Akagera National Park, covering 1,122 km² of eastern Rwanda along the Tanzanian border, is one of Africa's most remarkable conservation success stories. After near-collapse following the 1994 genocide — when refugees and their livestock occupied two-thirds of the park — Akagera has been transformed under a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks.

Lions were reintroduced in 2015, Eastern black rhinos in 2017 and 2019, and the park was officially declared a Big Five destination in 2017. Today, Akagera hosts healthy populations of elephants (over 100), buffalo, lions, leopards, and both black and white rhinos.

What to See & Do

Game Drives: Morning and afternoon drives through savanna, woodland, and lakeside terrain. Key sightings include lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and a vast array of antelope species.

Boat Safari on Lake Ihema: A 2–3 hour cruise past hippo pods, massive Nile crocodiles, African fish eagles, and shoebill storks (one of Africa's most sought-after birds).

Night Drives: Available with advance booking, offering the chance to spot leopards, hyenas, civets, and bushbabies.

Behind-the-Scenes Rhino Tracking: A specialist experience with the park's anti-poaching unit, tracking rhinos on foot with armed rangers.

Where to Stay

- Magashi Camp (Wilderness): 6 luxury tented suites on Lake Rwanyakazinga's shores. The most premium option. - Ruzizi Tented Lodge: Mid-range eco-lodge near the southern gate, with lake views and excellent birding. - Karenge Bush Camp: Basic but charming bush camp for an authentic wilderness experience.

Akagera is a 2.5-hour drive from Kigali, making it easy to combine with gorilla trekking in a 5–7 day circuit. The combo permit ($1,050 gorilla + Akagera) makes this one of the best-value multi-park safaris in Africa.
