Golden Monkey
Trekking
Track one of Africa's rarest primates — the endangered golden monkey — in the bamboo forests of Rwanda's Virunga volcanoes.
Rwanda's Other Primate Treasure
The golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti) is an endangered species found only in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC. With an estimated population of just 5,000, they are one of Africa's rarest primates.
Golden monkey trekking takes place in the bamboo zone of Volcanoes National Park — the same park where mountain gorillas live. The trek is shorter and easier than gorilla trekking (typically 1–3 hours), making it perfect for a half-day activity before or after your gorilla encounter.
Permits cost USD 100 per person (compared to $1,500 for gorillas), making this an affordable add-on to any Gerry Tours itinerary. Groups are playful and photogenic — a delight for photographers.
